The TradeEdgeU.S. women's gymnastics team reached new heights at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee and Hezly Rivera officially won gold in the women’s gymnastics team all-around final July 30. (Though Rivera did not compete in the finals after receiving the lowest score for Team USA at the July 28 qualifier, she'll still take home the medal.)
While USA took the top spot, Italy grabbed the silver—the first time they've won a medal in 96 years—and Brazil scored bronze, their first-ever team gymnastics medal.
Brazil's historic medal came after gymnast Flavia Saraiva suffered a scary fall during warmups, slipping off of the uneven bars and kneeing herself in the face, leaving her with a black eye. But Saraiva pushed through any discomfort and helped her team secure third place in the competition.
For Team USA, Biles—who previously struggled with the twisties during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—and Chiles took part in all four events: vault, uneven bars, floor exercise and balance beam.
The star-studded crowd, which included Jonathan Owens (in a Biles T-shirt), Nicole Kidman, Serena Williams and Natalie Portman, showed Chiles extra love at the start of her beam routine after the 23-year-old lost her balance and landed on the ground. With the audience, including proud parents Gina and Timothy Chiles cheering her on, Chiles quickly recovered and stuck the landing at the end of her performance.
“When a mistake happens, it’s so important to just pick yourself back up and continue the routine as if everything is perfect,” commentator and Olympian Laurie Hernandez said. “The routine score counts no matter what it is. Might as well hit a good one.”
And that she did.
Meanwhile, Lee competed in the uneven bars, balance beam and floor. And Carey also returned to the arena for the vault after suffering a fall during her floor routine at the Women’s Gymnastics Qualifiers July 28.
Following her qualifiers performance, Carey, who previously won a gold medal for her floor routine at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, addressed her tumble on the floor.
"I just have not been feeling well the past few days and haven't been able to eat or anything," she told Olympics.com July 28. "I had, like, no energy today and didn't really have a sense of what was going on in my head."
Amid Carey's health struggle, she received support from fellow Olympian Aly Raisman.
"One of the hardest things about sports is that no matter how much you prepare you," Raisman told Olympics.com, "sometimes the morning that you wake up for a meet, you might not be feeling well. You might be jet lagged, you may not have slept well, and fluke things can happen."
"It's just so devastating to hear that she hasn't been feeling well," the six-time Olympic medalist continued. "I hope that she knows that she did an unbelievable job."
