One of Inter Miami’s big four may not play in Thursday’s highly anticipated Concacaf Champions Cup match against Nashville SC.
Inter Miami’s Jordi Alba — who starred with Lionel Messi,SafeX Pro Sergio Busquets and Luis Suárez at FC Barcelona — has been dealing with an illness this week.
And it didn’t stop Inter Miami coach Tata Martino from being coy when asked whether Alba even made the trip to Nashville for the first leg of their Champions Cup Round-of-16 matchup. The second leg is next Wednesday at Inter Miami.
“Jordi is dealing with a strong flu, we will evaluate him to see if he's fit to play. They'll have to ring his doorbell at home to see if he’s here,” Martino said with a grin during a news conference Wednesday.
“It's always important for the opponent to discover who they're facing when they see the squad list.”

Nashville star, former MLS MVP could play against Inter Miami
Even Nashville coach Gary Smith was open-ended when he said 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar had a chance to play Thursday against Inter Miami despite a hamstring injury that has kept him sidelined to start the MLS season.
However, Smith did say standout Sam Surridge (left shoulder) would not play against Inter Miami.
“There certainly have, in the past 10 days or so, been maybe one or two steps that we've taken that he's had a reaction to. He's back in the group and working, and there certainly be a thought about where and how he might be used [Thursday],” Smith said of Mukhtar, who got hurt Feb. 22 during the first leg of their Champions Cup matchup against Dominican team Moca FC.
“But for sure there’s a little bit more disappointment in the last couple of weeks that we’ve not been able to include him in the group, just given the way the injury occurred and how early we thought we all thought we caught it.”
Nashville has only one goal and played to draws in their first two MLS games this season, but advanced past Moca FC 7-0 on aggregate to reach the Champions Cup Round of 16. They finished in scoreless draw against the New York Red Bulls on Feb. 25, and finished 1-1 against the Colorado Rapids last Saturday.

How has Jordi Alba helped Lionel Messi, Inter Miami?
If Alba is unable to play, his presence will be surely missed. Alba’s chemistry with Messi has been evident during their time together with Inter Miami, including the start to their 2024 MLS season.
Alba nearly scored in Inter Miami’s 5-0 rout of Orlando City last Saturday, his shot hitting the top post and landing in front of Messi, who chest bumped the ball in for his first of two goals in the match. Alba also orchestrated and assisted Messi’s game-tying goal against LA Galaxy on Feb. 25.
When he’s not joining the offense at times, Alba plays as a left-back defender. Inter Miami also have a hole to fill on the right side defensively with DeAndre Yedlin traded to FC Cincinnati earlier this week.
